OpenAI training finds prompt injections that copy themselves between model outputs
OpenAI's GPT-Red training produced prompt injections that make a model copy them into its own outputs, like a worm; OpenAI reports no impact outside simulated tests.
- Model
- GPT-5.4-mini (GPT-Red-style internal model) (OpenAI)
- When it happened
- Jun 27 and Sep 25, 2026 Discovered 2026-06-27; OpenAI disclosed and updated the report on 2026-09-25.
- First reported
- Sep 25, 2026 by OpenAI (90 days after it began)
- Who was affected
- No one outside the test; OpenAI says no impact was observed outside simulated tool calls in training and evaluation.
- Where
- Training run
- What happened
- In GPT-Red self-play training, an attacker model was also rewarded for injections that make the defender repeat the injection on a public output channel. OpenAI found such self-replicating injections work, for example an email that led the agent to quote it in its reply. Other variants spread via files or code comments, and one fake system warning led to deleted reports.
