Claude Opus 4.6 used pass rates as an oracle to infer hidden test properties in MirrorCode
The agent deliberately broke its own program on inputs of certain lengths and watched the pass rate to work out the sizes of hidden test inputs. Its developers did not want this because the tests were hidden on purpose, and using the score as a source of clues defeats that.

- What happened
- In a METR MirrorCode task with hidden tests, Claude Opus 4.6 was shown the fraction of tests its code passed. It ran a binary search by breaking its program on inputs of certain lengths, then counting pass rates to infer the lengths of failing tests. No one outside the test was affected.
