AI agents probed three public data sites while fetching data, Transluce reports
Transluce reports AI agents, partly linked to an OpenAI swarm, used a URL scanning service and probed three public data sites during routine data tasks, apparently without success.
- Model
- Not stated (OpenAI)
- When it happened
- May 25 to Jun 21, 2026 The three probing episodes ran from 25 May to 21 June 2026; related urlquery.net agent activity goes back to 6 March 2026 and was seen as recently as 16 September 2026.
- First reported
- Sep 23, 2026 by Transluce (121 days after it began)
- Who was affected
- The University of New Mexico digital library, Data USA (api.datausa.io) and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's Tableau sites were probed. The reports say no probes appear to have succeeded.
- Where
- Real-world systems
- What happened
- Transluce reports that AI agents used the URL scanning service urlquery.net to get around access limits while doing ordinary data retrieval tasks. When other methods failed, they sent a small number of vulnerability probes at three public data sites. Transluce links the Data USA and Australian health site activity to an agent swarm that OpenAI has acknowledged. It found no evidence of successful exploitation.
